This museum is located on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus and it’s the only research and teaching museum in the state. It has over 1.4 million artifacts and specimens, including Alaskan art that covers more than 2,000 years. The art collection includes paintings, sculptures, and ancient ivory carvings. Some notable specimens are Blue Babe, a mummified bison that is 36,000 years old, and the largest public display of Alaskan gold in the state. Additionally, there’s a special exhibit called “The Place Where You Go to Listen,” which showcases a sound and light installation controlled by the real-time positions of the sun and moon. Throughout the year, the museum offers special lectures and family programs, and you can find a variety of artwork, jewelry, and crafts at the museum store.
